Dojo cleaning

Dojo cleaning

It's not so much aikido principles but principles of any training in Japanese or Eastern martial arts in a Western culture. As I discussed in a blog post I'm not sure whose task it is to clean the dojo, including mopping up the mat. Please read this blog post to see my thoughts on this question, and I would be very happy if you could share your thoughts about it.

Basically, the question is whether it is the instructor who should clean the dojo (provided that there aren't any uchi deshi around and other martial artist might also use the room for training) or the students. In other words, is it that you pay the teacher and then it's their task to keep the dojo clean, or is it an honour to attend sensei's class and it's your task (as traditionally in Japan) to clean up the place? What is it like in your dojo? What do you think about this question? What does your sensei say about it?
